Pink October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month
What is Pink October?
October, known as Pink Month, is the international period dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, one of the most common diseases among women worldwide. The campaigns of this month aim to highlight the importance of regular check-ups, early detection, and specialized treatments, thus saving thousands of lives every year.
In Albania, during October, the Ministry of Health and public health institutions provide free mammography for women in higher-risk age groups, as part of the effort to bring this service closer to the community.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a type of cancer that develops when breast cells begin to multiply
uncontrollably, forming a mass or tumor. This tumor can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant
(cancerous). When malignant, it has the potential to spread to other parts of the body through the
blood or lymphatic system.
According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer remains the leading cause of
cancer-related deaths among women. However, early detection through regular screenings and
mammography significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and complete
recovery.

Signs and symptoms to watch for
Recognizing warning signs is essential. The main symptoms include:
● A lump or hard mass in the breast or under the arm.
● Changes in the size, shape, or symmetry of the breast.
● Wrinkles, ulcers, or dimpling of the breast skin.
● Visible changes in the nipple (inversion, unusual discharge, bleeding).
● Persistent pain or discomfort in the breast area.
It is important to emphasize that not every change indicates cancer, but any new sign
should be evaluated by a doctor through clinical examinations and imaging tests.
🎗How can we act to prevent it?
Prevention is closely linked to health education and regular care:
● Breast self-examination: every woman should check her breasts once a month to notice
possible changes.

● Regular medical visits: clinical check-ups with a gynecologist or family doctor help with
early detection.
● Mammography: the most reliable exam for early diagnosis. It is recommended for
women over 40, but also earlier if there is a family history of breast cancer.
● Lifestyle choices: healthy eating, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight,
avoiding smoking, and reducing alcohol intake lower the risk.
📍Where can we go in Albania?
During October, mammography is provided free of charge for women as part of the “Pink
October” campaign. The service is available in:
● Primary health care centers: The Oncology Hospital.
● University and regional hospitals, especially QSUT “Mother Teresa” in Tirana.
● Mobile mammography units, often placed in municipalities or main squares to ensure
access in areas where services are lacking.
Women are encouraged to contact their family doctor or their registered health center for
information on schedules and registration procedures.
“You never know how strong you are, unless being strong is the only choice.”
Taking care of your health is the most valuable investment every woman can make for herself
and her family. Pink October serves as a reminder to all women that mammography is not just a
routine exam, but an opportunity to live a longer and healthier life.

In the framework of Pink October, New Vision invites It’s volunteers to take part in the “Race
for the Cure”, organized by Europa Donna Albania.
This annual race is more than just a sporting event, it is a powerful movement dedicated to
raising awareness about breast cancer, one of the most widespread health challenges for women
worldwide. Through participation, the event not only spreads a message of prevention and early
detection, but also provides concrete support: every entry contributes to offering breast
prostheses for women in need.
By joining as a volunteer, you will be part of a community that runs for a cause, standing in
solidarity, promoting hope, and empowering lives.
